The Institute for Security Studies, Africa Peace Forum and the Hanns Seidel Foundation cordially invite you to a Human Security Roundtable Meeting on Criminal Gangs and the Threats to Human and State Security in Kenya to be held on the 26th of May, 2008 at the Norfolk, Nairobi starting 9 a.m. to end at 4:00 p.m (lunch included).
This seminar seeks to raise awareness on the impact of gang / militia crime on development and governance in Kenya. The specific objectives of the meeting are:
- To share experiences of gang culture and crime from South Africa and tease out the differences in the modus operandi of gangs in the 2 countries. The key question is to learn how South Africa has attempted to contain the problem and if Kenya can draw some lessons from this;
- To discuss the impact of gang/militia crime on development and prospects for economic growth;
- To debate security issues of national relevance and open up dialogue on the link between human and state security;
- To discuss issues that militate against the Kenyan Government from containing the problem and
- To discuss possible alternative modes of policing for Kenya.
Note: Chatham House Rules will apply to this Roundtable Meeting
