Africa Peace Forum
The Africa Peace Forum (APFO) is a non-governmental organization based
in Nairobi, Kenya with an overall objective to contribute to the prevention,
resolution and effective management of conflict by engaging state and
non-state actors in developing collaborative approaches towards lasting
peace and enhanced human security in the Greater Horn of Africa and beyond.
APFO’s vision is sustainable peace and security in Africa. With
this vision in mind, APFO has defined programmes and activities in the
following areas:
- Track II Diplomacy for peace processes in Eastern Africa – The Executive Director of Africa Peace Forum, Ambassador Bethuel Kiplagat, currently chairs the Somali peace talks;
- Small arms research and advocacy;
- Situation analysis and up-dates on conflict trends in the region;
- Researches on gun-related crimes in Kenya and neighbouring countries;
- Livestock rustling and border instability;
- Early Warning and Early Response Network – IGAD CEWARN and Great Lakes EWN;
- Policy forums on peace issues within Kenya and the region;
- Engendering peace processes;
- The promotion of research and development of traditional methods for conflict resolution.
APFO implements its project activities through a range of activities; from joint research endeavours, workshops, report publication, training sessions, policy forums conferences. These activities are funded from a wide range of sources including international research organizations, governments and ecumenical organizations.
APFO staff comprises former diplomats, researchers, academicians and practitioners, who strongly believe in collaborative approaches as well as the engagement of both state and non-state actors in the search for lasting peace in the continent. An open door policy is maintained, enabling APFO to interact and consult with governments in the region, inter-governmental authorities ecumenical organizations, the media group, women organizations and groups, and a variety of civil society organizations within the Greater Horn of Africa and beyond.
The Forum has a Board of Directors whose membership is drawn from eminent individuals from countries in the Greater Horn.
