
west africa network for peacebuilding (wanep)
The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) is a non-profit membership
organization with the goal of facilitating coalition building among conflict
prevention and Peacebuilding organizations and practitioners in West Africa.
Its core objectives include the following:
- Strengthen the capability of peacebuilding organizations and
practitioners in West Africa to engage actively in the peaceful transformation
of
violent conflicts.
- Increase awareness on the use of non-violent strategies in responding
to conflicts in West Africa.
- Develop a conflict prevention network to monitor, report, and offer indigenous
perspectives and understanding on conflicts in West Africa.
- Harmonize peacebuilding activities in West Africa through networking
and coordination of WANEP members.
- Create a forum for mutual sharing and harmonization of human rights and
Peacebuilding activists and practitioners in West Africa.
Core programs include:
- West Africa Peacebuilding Institute, an annual training and
research institute which encourages research and learning among Peacebuilding
practitioners in West Africa.
- Active Non-violence and Peace Education with the aim of promoting peace
and social reconciliation in schools.
- Justice Lens Project focuses on the relationship of justice and Peacebuilding
looking at transitions in West Africa
- West Africa Early Warning and Response Network reporting on conflict
and human security issues in West Africa and mobilizing concerted
and informed responses.

Women in Peacebuilding Network focuses on the development of women‚s
capacities and compentency to participate in peace
processes in West Africa.
WANEP has 300 member organizations in 16 countries including
Chad and Cameroon. It is governed by
an Annual General Assembly that
meets once a year, an
Advisory Council that advises on policy
direction and an Executive Board that supervises the
Management Team.
WANEP has permanent offices in 6 countries and has
won a USAID grant to increase the offices
to ten countries: Liberia,
Sierra
Leone,
Ghana, Burkina
Faso, Senegal, the Gambia, Togo, Nigeria,
Cote d‚Ivoire, and Guinea.
The Regional Secretariat is based in
Accra, Ghana.
